Revelation
1Apocalypse of Yeshua Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what things must happen in haste,1 1:1 tachei τάχει 5034 táxos | As a taxi refers to speed, see 5035 taxy, "without unnecessary delay” does not mean "immediately" or necessarily "in a very short time” from now, but rather when it happens, "without any delay.” and he signified it through having sent his angel to his servant, John2 1:1 Irenaeus (A.D. 180), a student of Polycarp (disciple of the apostle John), wrote that the apocalyptic vision “was seen ... at the close of the reign of Domitian” (Against Heresies 30): Emperor Domitian (self-proclaimed “Lord and God”) reigned from AD 81 to 96., 2 who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, as much as he saw.
3 Blessed the reading, and those hearing the words of the prophecy, and keeping the things having been written in it—for the time is near.
4 John, to the seven congregations in Asia:3 1:4 Literally in Asia; Asia was a Roman province in what is now western Turkey.
Grace and peace to you from him who is and was and is to come, and from the seven spirits4 1:4 seven spirits ⚠️ | Note that the NLT translation errantly changes “the seven spirits” into one as “the sevenfold Spirit” (also at Rev 3:1,4:5,5:6) in order to teach this so-called “sevenfold spirit” is actually “the Holy Spirit” as support for the trinity doctrine—the consequences of this change should be noted at Revelation 22:18,19. before his throne, 5 and from Yeshua Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth, who is loving us and releasing us from our sins through blood, 6 and who has made us to be a kingdom, priestsa 1:6 | Exodus 19:6 “...you will be my kingdom of priests.” Isaiah 61:6 “...you will be called YeHoWâH יְהֹוָה’s priests.” to his Godb 1:6 | Rev 7:9,14,15, “...the great crowd… who have come out of the great tribulation… they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple.” and Father—to him the glory and the dominion to the ages of the ages. Amen.
7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him—and those who pierced him will mourn because of him, and all the tribes of the earth—Yes! Amen!
8 “I am Alpha and Omega,5 1:8 ⚠️ TR errantly reads: Alpha and Omega, Beginning and End” says the Lord God6 1:8 ⚠️ TR errantly omits “God”, the being, who is and was and is coming—the Almighty7 1:8 is coming—the Almighty | The Almighty “Alpha and Omega” is God who is coming—not his mighty son—speaking: Rev 4:8-10 “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!… the One seated on the throne who lives forever and ever… our Lord and God” and “Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, that you have taken your great power and have begun to reign” is God, and his kingdom (Rev 11:17), not to be confused with his Son and the thousand year reign (Rev 20:4)..
John’s Vision on Patmos
9 I, John8 1:9 earliest commentary on the book of Revelation | Victorinus (late third century) wrote, "When John said these things, he was in the island of Patmos, condemned to the mines by Caesar Domitian. There he saw the Apocalypse—and when at length grown old, he thought that he should receive his release by suffering—but Domitian being killed, he was liberated." (Commentary on Revelation 10:11) “There is no mention in any writer of the first three centuries of any other time or place.”—McClintock and Strong, Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature, 1969, your brother and partner in the tribulation and kingdom and endurance in Yeshua9 1:9 tribulation... and endurance in Yeshua | Jerome (A.D. 340-420) said, In the fourteenth then after Nero, Domitian having raised up a second persecution, he [John] was banished to the island of Patmos and wrote the Apocalypse (Lives of Illustrious Men 9)., was on the island called Patmos10 1:9 exiled on Patmos by Domitian | Clement of Alexandria (A.D. 155-215) says that John returned from the isle of Patmos “after the tyrant was dead,” and Eusebius, known as the “Father of Church History,” identifies the “tyrant” as Domitian (Ecclesiastical History III.23)., on account of the word of God and the testimony of Yeshua11 1:9 testimony of Yeshua | Domitian was fond banishment so that John—the last apostle, and only apostle to die of old age—was exiled to an island, while Peter and Paul were murdered in the time of Nero. (Eusebius III.18—II.25).. 10 I was in spirit in12 1:10 in | en (a preposition) – properly, in (inside, within)—(figuratively) "in the realm (sphere) of," as in the condition (state) in which something operates from the inside (within). the Lord’s dayc 1:10 | Joel 1:15 “Woe because of that day! For the Day of the Lord is near and will come as devastation from the Almighty.”, and I heard behind me a loud voice, like that of a trumpetd 1:10 | Joel 2:1 “Blow the horn in Zion… for the Day of the Lord is coming—in fact, it is near—“ , 11 saying,13 1:11 ⚠️ TR errantly adds: saying, “I am Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see write on a scroll and send it to the seven congregations14 1:11 ⚠️ TR errantly adds “which are in Asia” … while these were actual congregations in Asia at the time of John’s writing, we learn in verse 20 that these “are seven congregations” not specifically “the” [seven congregations] “in Asia” : to Ephesus15 1:11 Ephesus | Eusebius records John was sent to Patmos by Domitian, and when those unjustly banished by Domitian were released by his successor Nerva (A.D. 96–98), the apostle returned to Ephesus. John continued to lived in Ephesus until he was very old, and presumably died, sometime after AD 98. According to Jerome's Commentary on Galatians, 6:10: “The blessed John the Evangelist lived in Ephesus until extreme old age. His disciples could barely carry him... and he could not muster the voice to speak many words. During individual gatherings he usually said nothing but, “Little children, love one another.” The disciples and brothers in attendance, annoyed because they always heard the same words, finally said, “Teacher, why do you always say this?” He replied with a line worthy of John: “Because it is the Lord's commandment and if it alone is kept, it is sufficient.” It is speculated that “the source for this story was possibly Hegesippus's Memoirs via either Clement of Alexandria or Origen” though none of these works survive today., Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.”
12 And I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned, I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in midst of the lampstands, one like the Son of Man,16 1:13 Or one like a son of man; see Daniel 7:13 where the “son of man” whom he calls “Lord” comes to Daniel (Dan 10) to explain the prophecy of 70 weeks (Dan 9) and the last week (Dan 11:21-12:1) unveiled in Revelation. The number or unit of seven has signifigance in the prophecy in Revelation as a division of seven, called a “week” in Hebrew, which is most commonly days, but can be other units, such seven years in the case of the prophecy given Daniel (the last “week”), and Revelation (1,260 days + 3.5 times—or 1,290 days per Dan 12:11). clothed to the feet, girded at the chest with a golden sash. 14 Moreover, his head and hair white, like wool, white as snow, and his eyes like a flame of fire. 15 His feet like polished bronze, as in a furnace having been refined, and his voice like the voice of many waters. 16 And he is holding in his right hand seven stars, and out of his mouth a sharp double-edged sword17 1:16 out of his mouth a sharp double-edged sword | Christ is called “The Word of God” Revelation 19:13. “He made my mouth like a sharp sword” Isaiah 49:2, “For the Word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even as far as division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrows, and able to judge thoughts and intentions of heart.” Hebrews 4:12. is coming out. And his face like the sun shining in its full strength.
17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. And he placed his right hand upon me, saying, “Fear not, I am the First and the Last, 18 and the Living—and I was dead, and behold, I am living to the ages of ages! And I hold the keys of Death and of Hadese 1:18 | “YeHoWâH יְהֹוָה brings Death and gives Life—he brings down to Sheol [Hades] and raises up.” (1 Sam 2:6, Job 26:6,38:17).
19 Write therefore the things you have seen, and the things that are, and the things that about to take place after these. 20 This is the mystery of the seven stars, that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven congregations, and the seven lampstands are seven congregations.
Ephesus
(Acts 19:8–12; Ephesians 1:1–2)
2“To the angel of the congregation in Ephesus1 2:1 Ephesus | Paul founded the congregation of Ephesus in the latter part of Claudius’s reign (r. AD 41–54). When Paul wrote to them from Rome 61 AD, he commends their love and faith. (See Ephesians, 1:15) write—
These things says he holding the seven stars in his right hand, walking in midst of the seven golden lampstands:
2 I know your deeds—the labor, and your endurance, and that you are not able to tolerate evil. And you have tested those claiming to be apostles and are not, and you have found them false. 3 And you have endurance, and have endured for the sake of my name, and have not grown weary.
4 But I have against you that you have abandoned your first love.a 2:4 | “I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the holy...” Ephesians 1:15 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent, and do the first works2 2:5 first works | Read Ephesians 4-6 for Paul’s expectations for the works of the members of this congregation at the time of being commended for their love, and faith, and urges them to “walk in a manner worthy of the calling you have received.”.
If not however, I am coming to you, and I will remove your lampstand out of its place if you should not repent.
6 But this you have, that you hate the works of the Nicolaitans3 2:6 Nicolaitans | a full-fledged sect at the time of John’s vision, had only been hinted at in general terms in 2 Peter and Jude written ~65-66 AD, which I also hate.
7 He having an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the congregations.
He overcoming, I will give to him to eat of the tree of lifeb 2:7 | Genesis 2:9,3:22, Proverbs 3:18,11:30,13:12,15:4, Revelation 22:2,3,14,19, “Blessed are those washing their robes, that their right will be to the tree of life, and by the gates they shall enter into the city.” (Rev 7:14, 21:12,21), which is in the paradisec 2:7 | “...a man, having been caught up to the third heaven, ...he was caught up into Paradise...” —Paul (2 Cor 12:2,4) of God.
Smyrna
8 To the angel of the congregation in Smyrna4 2:8 Smyrna | same word as myrrh, see Strong’s 4666 smýrna —myrrh, a perfume used as incensewrite—
These things says the First and the Last, who became dead and came to life:
9 I know your tribulation and poverty—but you are rich!—and the blasphemy of those claiming to be Jews themselves, and are not but a synagogue of Satan.
10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, so that you might be tested—and you shall have tribulation ten days. Be faithful unto death, and I will give to you the crown of life.
11 He having an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the congregations.
He overcoming, no, shall not be harmed by the second death.
Pergamum
12 To the angel of the congregation in Pergamum write—
These things says he having the sharp two-edged sword:
13 I know where you dwell—where the throne of Satan is—and you hold fast to my name, and you have not denied my faith, even in the days of Antipas my witness, my faithful, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.
14 But I have against you a few things, because you have there holding the teaching of Balaam, who would teach Balak to cast a snare before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality. 15 So likewise you also have holding the teaching of the Nicolaitans.
16 Repent therefore! If not however, I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of my mouth.
17 He having an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the congregations.
He overcoming, I will give to him the manna having been hidden, and I will give to him a white stone, and on the stone a new name having been written, which no one has known except he receiving it.
Thyatira
(Acts 16:11–15)
18 To the angel of the congregation in Thyatira write—
These things says the Son of God, he having his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet like burnished bronze:
19 I know your works, and your love, and your faith, and your service, and endurance—and your works, the latter greater than the first.
20 But I have against you that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, she calling herself a prophetess and teaching and misleading my servants to commit sexual immorality and to eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 And I have given her time that she might repent, and she is not willing to repent of her sexual immorality.
22 Behold, I will cast her into a sickbed, and those committing adultery with her into great tribulation if they shall not repent of her deeds. 23 And her children I will kill with death, and all the congregations will know that I am he searching affections and hearts—and I will give to each of you according to your works.
24 To you however I say, the rest of those in Thyatira, as many as do not have this teaching, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say: I will not cast upon you any other burden. 25 But hold fast to what you have until when I may come.
26 And he overcoming and keeping until the end my works, I will give to him authority over the nations 27 and he will shepherd them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken in pieces just as I also have received from my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star.
29 He having an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the congregations.
Sardis
3“To the angel of the congregation in Sardis write:
These are the words of the one who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.
I know your deeds, that reputation you have that you are alive, and yet you are dead. 2 Be watching, and strengthen the things that remain, which are about to die—for I have not found your works having been completed in the sight of my God.
3 Remember therefore what you have received and heard—and watch and repent. If therefore you shall not watch, I will come like a thief, and no, you shall not know at what hour I will come upon you.
4 But you have a few people in Sardis who have not stained their garments, and they will walk with me in white, because they are worthy.
5 He overcoming thus will be clothed in white garments. And no, I will not blot out1 3:5 Or scrape off his name from the Book of Life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
6 He having an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the congregations.
Philadelphia
7 To the angel of the congregation in Philadelphia write:
These things says the Holy, the True, having the key of David, he opening and no one will shut, and shutting and no one opens.2 3:7 See Isaiah 22:22.
8 I know your deeds. Behold, I have set before you a door having been opened, which no one is able to shut it, because you have little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
9 Behold, I give from the synagogue of Satan—those declaring themselves to be Jews, and are not, but they lie—behold, I will cause them that they will come and will worship before your feet, and they shall know that I have loved you.
10 Because you have kept the word of my patient endurance, I will also keep you out of the hour of the trial being about to come upon the whole inhabited world, to try those dwelling upon the earth. 11 I am coming quickly.3 3:11 Orsuddenly or hastily Hold fast to what you have, so that no one may take your crown.
12 He overcoming, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall not go out anymore. And I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from my God, and my new name.
13 He having an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the congregations.
Laodicea
(Colossians 2:1–5)
14 To the angel of the congregation in Laodicea write:
These things says the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the origin4 3:14 OrChief or Ruler of God’s creation.
15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you would be cold or hot! 16 So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, ‘I am rich, and I have grown rich, and I have need of nothing.’
And you do not realize that you are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.
18 I counsel you to buy from me gold having been refined by fire so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may be clothed and the shame your of nakedness might not be made manifest, and eye-salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.
19 As many as I might love, I rebuke and discipline—be zealous therefore and repent.
20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock—if anyone should hear my voice and open the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.
21 He overcoming, I will give to him to sit with me on my throne, as I also overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.
22 He having an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the congregations.”
The Throne in Heaven
4After these things I looked, and behold, a door was standing open in heaven, and the first voice that I heard like a trumpet was speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after these things.”
2 Immediately I was in spirit, and behold, a throne was set in heaven, and he sitting upon the throne, 3 and he sitting was in appearance like jasper and carnelian stone. And a rainbow was around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. 4 And surrounding the throne, twenty-four thrones—and on the thrones twenty-four elders sitting having been clothed in white garments, and on their heads, golden crowns.
Worship of the Creator
5 And out of the throne come flashes of lightning, and voices, and thunderings. And seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God. 6 And before the throne like a sea of glass, like crystal. And in midst of the throne and around the throne, four living creatures, being full of eyes in front and behind. 7 And the first living creature was like a lion, and the second living creature like a calf, and the third living creature having the face as of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle flying. 8 And the four living creatures, each of them had six wings respectively, full of eyes all around and within—and they did not have rest day and night, saying:
“Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty,
he having been, and he being, and he coming!”
9 And whenever the living creatures will give glory and honor and thanksgiving to he sitting upon the throne, he living to the ages of the ages, 10 the twenty-four elders will fall before he sitting upon the throne, and they will worship he living to the ages of the ages, and they will cast their crowns before the throne, saying:
11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
because of your will they existed and were created.”
Scroll with Seven Seals
5And I saw on the right hand of he sitting upon the throne a scroll, having been written inside and on back, having been sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll, and to break its seals?”
3 And no one was able in heaven, nor upon the earth, nor under the earth, to open the scroll, nor to see it. 4 And I was weeping loudly, because no one worthy was found to open the scroll, nor to see it.
5 And one of the elders says to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has overcome to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
6 And I saw in midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in midst of the elders, a Lamb standing as having been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God having been sent out into all the earth. 7 And he came and took it out of the right hand of he sitting on the throne.
8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls being full of incenses, which are the prayers of the holy. 9 And they are singing a new song, saying,
“Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and by your blood you purchased for God
out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
10 You have made them to our God
a kingdom and priests,
and they will reign upon the earth.”
The Lamb Exalted
11 And I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, and of the living creatures, and of the elders—and their number was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying in a loud voice:
“Worthy is the Lamb having been slain,
to receive the power and riches
and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and blessing!”
13 And every creature which is in heaven, and upon the earth, and under the earth, and on the sea, and everything in them, I heard saying:
“To he sitting on the throne,
and to the Lamb
blessing and honor and glory and might
to the ages of the ages.”
14 And the four living creatures kept saying, “Amen.” And the elders fell down and worshiped.1 5:14 TR includes him who lives for ever and ever.
The First Seal: The White Horse
6And I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying, like a voice of thunder, “Come!”
2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse, and he sitting on it having a bow—and a crown was given to him, and he went forth overcoming, and that he might conquer.
The Second Seal: War
3 And when he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come!”
4 And another horse went forth, bright red—and to he sitting on it, to him was granted to take the peace from the earth, and that they will slay one another—and a great sword was given to him.
The Third Seal: Famine
5 And when he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, “Come!”
And I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he sitting on it having a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard like a voice in midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A choenix of wheat for a denarius, and three choenixes of barley for a denarius,1 6:6 Greek A choenix of wheat for a denarius. A choenix was a Greek dry measure equivalent to 1.92 pints or 0.91 liters. A denarius was customarily a day’s wage for a laborer; see Matthew 20:2. and the oil and the wine you should not injure.”
The Fourth Seal: Death
7 And when he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come!”
8 And I looked, and behold, a pale horse, and he sitting on it, the name of him was Death, and Hades was following with him—and to them was given authority over the fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, and with famine, and with plague, and by the beasts of the earth.
The Fifth Seal: The Martyrs
9 And when he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those having been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had upheld. 10 And they were crying in a loud voice, saying,
“Until when, O Lord, holy and true?—do you not judge and avenge our blood from those dwelling upon the earth?”
11 And white robes were given to them each, and it was said to them that they shall rest yet a little time, until would be fulfilled also their fellow servants, and their brothers—those being about to be killed as they also.
The Sixth Seal: Terror
12 And I saw when he opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the whole moon became like blood, 13 and the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs, being shaken by a great wind.
14 And heaven departed like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great ones, and the commanders, and the rich, and the powerful, and every slave and free, hid themselves in the caves, and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 And they say to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us2 6:16 See Hosea 10:8. from the face of he seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 because the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”
144,000 Sealed
7After these things I saw four angels standing upon the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, so that no wind would blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
2 And I saw another angel, having ascended from the sun rising, having the seal of the living God. And he cried in a loud voice to the four angels to whom it had been given to them to harm the earth and the sea: 3 “Harm not the earth nor the sea, nor the trees, until we shall have sealed the servants of our God, on their foreheads.” 4 And I heard the number of those having been sealed, one hundred forty-four thousand, having been sealed out of every tribe of sons of Israel:
5 out of the tribe of Judah twelve thousand having been sealed,
out of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand,
out of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand,
6 out of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand,
out of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand,
out of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand,
7 out of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand,
out of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand,
out of the tribe of Isaachar twelve thousand,
8 out of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand,
out of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand,
out of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand having been sealed.
Praise from the Great Crowd
9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great crowd, which no one was able to number it, out of every nation, and tribes, and peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, having been clothed with white robes, and palm branches in their hands, 10 and they were crying out in a loud voice, saying: “Salvation to our God, sitting on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
11 And all the angels stood around the throne, and the elders, and the four living creatures, and they fell upon their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and strength, to our God, to the ages of the ages! Amen.”
13 And one of the elders responded, saying to me, “These having been clothed with the white robes, who are they, and from where have they come?” 14 And I said to him, “My lord, you know.”
And he said to me, “These are the coming out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb, 15 for this reason, they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple, and he sitting on the throne will tabernacle over them.
16 They will not hunger any more, neither will they thirst anymore,
nor shall the sun at all fall upon them, nor any scorching heat,1 7:16 Isaiah 49:10
17 because the Lamb in the center of the throne will shepherd them,2 7:17 See Psalm 23:1.
and he will lead them to springs of living waters,3 7:17 Isaiah 49:10
and ‘God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’4 7:17 Isaiah 25:8”
The Seventh Seal: Silence
8And when he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.
3 And another angel having a golden censer came and stood at the altar, and much incense was given to him that he will offer with the prayers of all the holy upon the golden altar before the throne. 4 And the smoke of the incense went up with the prayers of the holy, out of the hand of the angel, before God. 5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it from the fire of the altar, and cast to the earth—and there were thunders, and rumblings, and flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.
Seven Trumpets
6 And the seven angels having the seven trumpets prepared themselves, that they might sound the trumpets.
7 And the first sounded his trumpet, and there was hail and fire having been mixed with blood, and it was cast upon the earth. And a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.
8 And the second angel sounded his trumpet, and as if a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea. And a third of the sea became blood, 9 and a third of the creatures having life in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star fell out of heaven, burning like a torch. And it fell upon a third of the rivers, and upon the springs of waters. 11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood. And a third of the waters became wormwood,1 8:11 Literally became wormwood and many of the people died from the waters, because they were made bitter.
12 And the fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them should be darkened, and the day should not appear a third of it, and the night likewise.
13 And I looked, and I heard one eagle flying in mid-heaven, saying in a loud voice, “Woe! Woe! Woe to those dwelling on the earth, because of the sounds remaining of the trumpet of the three angels being about to sound trumpets!”
Woe, Woe, Woe
9And the fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star having fallen out of heaven to the earth, and the key of the pit of the abyss was given to it. 2 And he opened the pit of the abyss, and smoke went up out of the pit, like smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit.
3 And out of the smoke, locusts came forth unto the earth, and power was given to them, like the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 And it was said to them that they shall not harm the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men not having the seal of God on the foreheads. 5 And it was granted to them that they should not kill them, but that they shall torment five months. And their torment like torment of a scorpion when it might strike a man. 6 And in those days, men will seek death, and will not find it—and they will long to die, and death shall flee from them.
7 And the appearance of the locusts like horses having been prepared for battle, and upon their heads like crowns, like gold—and their faces like faces of men. 8 And they had hair like hair of women, and their teeth were like of lions. 9 And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings like sound of many chariots of horses rushing into battle. 10 And they have tails and stingers like scorpions, and their power to injure men for five months in their tails. 11 They have a king over them, the angel of the abyss. His name in Hebrew, Abaddon,1 9:11 Abaddon means Destruction. and in the Greek, he has the name Apollyon.2 9:11 Apollyon means Destroyer.
Two Woes Coming
12 The first woe has passed. Behold, two woes still are coming after these things.
13 And the sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard one voice from the four horns of the golden altar before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel, he having the trumpet, “Release the four angels, those having been bound at the great river Euphrates.”
15 And the four angels having been prepared for the hour and day and month and year were released, so that they might kill a third of mankind. 16 And the number of the armies of the cavalry twice ten thousand ten thousands—I heard the number of them.
17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and those sitting on them, having fiery and hyacinthine and brimstone breastplates. And the heads of the horses like heads of lions, and out of their mouths proceed fire and smoke and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues, a third of mankind was killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone proceeding out of their mouths. 19 For the powers of the horses are in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails like serpents having heads, and with them they injure.
20 And the rest of the men who were not killed by these plagues did not even repent of the works of their hands so that they will not worship the demons, and the golden and silver and bronze and stone and wooden idols, which are able neither to see, nor to hear, nor to walk. 21 And they did not repent of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.
The Angel and the Small Scroll
(Ezekiel 3:1–15)
10And I saw another mighty angel coming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud, and a rainbow upon his head, and his face like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire, 2 and having in his hand a little scroll being open. And he placed his right foot upon the sea, and the left upon the earth. 3 And he cried out in a loud voice as a lion roars. And when he cried out, the seven thunders sounded their voice.
4 And when the seven thunders had spoken, I was about to write. But I heard a voice out of heaven, saying, “Seal what the seven thunders have spoken, and do not write them.”
5 And the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his right hand to heaven, 6 and he swore by he living to the ages of the ages, who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, “There will be no more delay! 7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound the trumpet, then the mystery of God would be completed, as proclaimed to his servants, the prophets.”
8 And the voice that I heard out of heaven was speaking with me again and saying, “Go, take the little scroll having been opened in the hand of the angel standing upon the sea and upon the land.”
9 And I went to the angel, saying to him, “Give me the little scroll.”
And he says to me, “Take and eat it; and your stomach it will make bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.”1 10:9 See Numbers 5:24 and Ezekiel 3:3.
10 And I took the little scroll out of the hand of the angel, and I ate it; and it was sweet as honey in my mouth; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter.
11 And they say to me, “It is necessary for you to prophesy again concerning many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.”
The Two Witnesses
11And a measuring rod like a staff was given to me, saying, “Rise and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and those worshiping in it. 2 And leave out the courtyard outside the temple, and do not measure it, because it has been given to the nations, and they will trample upon the holy city forty and two months. 3 And I will grant to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy a thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”
4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the Lord of the earth.1 11:4 See Zechariah 4:14. 5 And if anyone should desire to harm them, fire goes out of their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone should desire to harm them, thus it is necessary for him to be killed. 6 These have the power to shut the sky, so that no rain shall fall in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over the waters, to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they might desire.
The Witnesses Killed and Raised
7 And when they shall have completed their testimony, the beast coming up out of the abyss will make war with them, and will overcome them, and will kill them. 8 And their body will be upon the street of the great city—which is called spiritually Sodom and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified. 9 And gaze from the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations upon their bodies—three and a half days—and their bodies they will not allow to be put into a tomb. 10 And those dwelling on the earth rejoice over them and make merry, and will send gifts to one another, because these two prophets have tormented those dwelling upon the earth.
11 And after the three and a half days, spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon those beholding them. 12 And they heard a great voice out of heaven, saying to them, “Come up here.” And they went up to heaven in the cloud, and their enemies beheld them.
13 And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell, and seven thousand names of men were killed in the earthquake. And the rest became terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
Woe to the Earth and the Sea
14 The second woe has passed. Behold, the third woe is coming quickly.
Kingdom Come, Lord God Almighty Reigns
15 And the seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were great voices in heaven, saying:
“The kingdom of the world has become of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign to the ages of the ages.”
16 And the twenty-four elders sitting on their thrones before God fell upon their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying:
“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
he who is and who was,2 11:17 TR includes and who is to come.
because you have taken your great power
and have begun to reign.
18 The nations were enraged,3 11:18 See Psalm 2:1. and your wrath came,
and the time for the dead to be judged,a 11:18 See Daniel 12:2.
and to give the reward to your servants, the prophets,
and to reward your servants the prophets,
and to the holy, and to those fearing your name,
the small and the great,
and to destroy those who are destroying the earth.”
19 And the temple of God in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen in his temple.
And there were flashes of lightning, and voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.
The Woman and the Dragon
12And a great sign was seen in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars, 2 and having in womb. And she cries out, being in labor, and being in pain to bring forth.
3 And another sign was seen in heaven, and behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his heads, seven diadems. 4 And his tail drags a third of the stars of heaven, and he cast them to the earth. And the dragon stands before the woman being about to bring forth, so that when she should bring forth, he might devour her child...
5 And she brought forth a male son—who is about to shepherd all the nations with a rod of iron1 12:5 See Psalm 2:9 (see also LXX). —and her child was caught up to God, and to his throne.
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place having been prepared there by God, so that they should nourish her there 1,260 days.
The War in Heaven
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels warred against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels warred. 8 And he did not have strength, nor was found a place for them any longer in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was thrown—the ancient serpent, who is called devil and Satan, deceiving the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
10 And I heard a great voice in heaven, saying:
“Now the salvation, and the power,
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Christ have come,
because the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down—
he accusing them before our God day and night.
11 And they have overcome him by reason of the blood of the Lamb,
and by reason of the word of their testimony,
and they have not loved their life unto death.
12 Therefore rejoice, O heavens,
and those dwelling in them!
Woe to the earth and the sea,
because the devil has come down to you, having great fury,
knowing that he has a short time.”
The Woman Persecuted
13 And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who had brought forth the male.
14 And the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly from the face of the serpent into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished there a time, and times, and half a time.
15 And out of his mouth the serpent cast water as a river after the woman, so that he might cause her to be carried away by a flood. 16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the river, which the dragon had cast out of his mouth.
17 And the dragon was angry with the woman, and he went to make to war with the rest of her children keeping the commandments of God and holding the testimony of Yeshua.
And he stood upon the sand of the sea.2 12:17 BYZ and TR And I stood on the sand of the sea. Some texts number this sentence as verse 18; others include it with Revelation 13:1.
The Beast from the Sea
(Daniel 7:1–8)
13And I saw rising out of the sea a beast, having ten horns, and seven heads, and on its horns, ten diadems, and upon its heads, names of blasphemy. 2 And the beast that I saw was like a leopard, and its feet like a bear’s, and its mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave to it his power, and his throne, and great authority.
3 And one of its heads as having been slain to death. And its wound of death was healed, and the whole earth marveled after the beast. 4 And they worshiped the dragon, who had given authority to the beast—and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? And who is able to make war against it?”
5 And a mouth was given to it, speaking great things and blasphemy, and it was given authority to act 42 months. 6 And it opened its mouth unto blasphemies against God, to blaspheme his name and his tabernacle—those dwelling in heaven.
7 And there was given to it to make war with the holy, and to overcome them. And authority was given to it over every tribe and people and tongue and nation. 8 And all dwelling on the earth will worship it, of whom their names have not been written from founding of the world in the Book of Life of the Lamb having been slain.1 13:8 Or written in the Book of Life belonging to the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world.
9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear:
10 “If anyone into captivity, into captivity he goes—
If anyone is to be killed2 13:10 NE, WH, and BYZ if anyone kills with sword,
by sword it is necessary for him to be killed.”3 13:10 See Jeremiah 15:2.
Here is the endurance and the faith of the holy.
The Beast from the Earth
11 And I saw another beast rising out of the earth, and it had two horns like a lamb, and it was speaking like a dragon. 12 And it exercises all the authority of the first beast in the presence of it, and causes the earth and those dwelling in it, that they will worship the first beast, of whom its fatal wound had been healed.
13 And it works great signs, so that it should even cause fire out of heaven to come down to the earth in the presence of men. 14 And it deceives those dwelling on the earth, by reason of the signs that were given to it to perform before the beast, telling those dwelling on the earth to make an image to the beast that has the wound of the sword and has lived. 15 And there was given to it to give breath to the image of the beast, so that image of the beast also should speak, and should cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast would be killed.
The Mark of the Beast
16 And it causes all the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the servants, that it should give them a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, 17 and that no one should be able to buy or to sell, if not the one having the mark—the name of the beast, or the number of its name.
18 Here is the wisdom: He having understanding, let him count the number of the beast, for it is a man’s number, and its number, six hundred sixty-six.4 13:18 666 | Some manuscripts six hundred sixteen
The Lamb and the 144,000
14And I looked, and behold, the Lamb was standing upon Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 having his name and the name of his Father having been written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a voice out of heaven like sound of many waters, and like sound of loud thunder. And the voice that I heard like that of harpists harping with their harps.
3 And they are singing as a new song before the throne, and before the four living creatures, and the elders. And no one was able to learn the song, except the 144,000 having been redeemed from the earth. 4 These are they who have not been defiled with women—for they are pure, these following the Lamb wherever he shall go. These have been redeemed out from men, firstfruits to God and to the Lamb. 5 And in their mouth was not found a lie—they are blameless.1 14:5 BYZ and TR include before the throne of God.
The Three Angels and Babylon’s Fall
6 And I saw another angel flying in mid-heaven, having age-long glad tidings to preach upon those dwelling on the earth, and upon every nation and tribe and tongue and people, 7 saying in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. And worship he having made heaven, and the earth, and sea, and springs of waters.”
8 And another, a second angel, followed, saying, “Fallen, Fallen is Babylon the Great,2 14:8 See Isaiah 21:9 and Revelation 18:2. who has given all the nations to drink of the wine of the passion of her immorality.”
9 And another, a third angel, followed them, saying in loud a voice, “If anyone worships the beast and its image, and receives a mark on his forehead or upon his hand, 10 he also will drink of the wine of the anger of God, having been mixed undiluted in the cup of his wrath—and he will be tormented in fire and brimstone before the holy angels and before the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment goes up to ages of ages—and those worshiping the beast and its image have no rest day and night, and if anyone receives the mark of its name.”
12 Here is the endurance of the holy, those keeping the commandments of God, and the faith of Yeshua.
13 And I heard a voice out of heaven, saying “Write, ‘Blessed the dead dying in the Lord from now on.’”
“Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labors, for their deeds will follow them.”
The Harvest of the Earth
14 And I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and upon the cloud is sitting he like the Son of Man,3 14:14 Or one like a son of man; see Daniel 7:13. having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying in a loud voice to he sitting on the cloud, “Put forth your sickle and reap, because the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth has ripened.” 16 And he sitting upon the cloud put forth his sickle upon the earth, and the earth was harvested.
17 And another angel came out of the temple in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. 18 And another angel having authority over the fire came out of the altar, and he called in a loud cry to he having the sharp sickle, saying, “Put forth your sharp sickle, and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, because its grapes have fully ripened.”
19 And the angel put forth his sickle to the earth and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast into the great winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And the winepress was trodden outside the city, and blood flowed out of the winepress, as high as the bridles of the horses, to the distance of 1,600 stadia.4 14:20 1,600 stadia is approximately 184 miles or 296 kilometers.
The Song of Moses and the Lamb
(Deuteronomy 32:1–47)
15And I saw another great and wonderful sign in heaven: seven angels, having seven plagues—the last, because in them the wrath of God was completed.
2 And I saw like a sea of glass mingled with fire, and those conquering over the beast, and over its image, and over the number of its name, standing upon the sea of glass, having harps of God. 3 And they are singing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying,
“Great and wonderful your works,
Lord God the Almighty!
Righteous and true your ways,
O King of the nations!1 15:3 SBL and WH King of the ages; TR King of the holy
4 O Lord, who should not fear, and glorify your name?
For you alone are holy.
For all the nations will come and worship before you,
for your righteous acts have been revealed.”
Preparation for Judgment
5 And after these things I looked, and the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened. 6 And the seven angels having the seven plagues came forth out of the temple, having been clothed in pure, bright linen, and having been girded with golden sashes around the chests.
7 And one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God, he living to the ages of the ages. 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power—and no one was able to enter into the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.
The First Six Bowls of Wrath
16And I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go and pour out into the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”
2 And the first departed and poured out his bowl into the earth, and an evil and grievous sore came upon the men having the mark of the beast and those worshiping its image.
3 And the second poured out his bowl into the sea, and it became blood, as of dead—and every living soul that was in the sea died.
4 And the third poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of the waters, and they became blood. 5 And I heard the angel of the waters saying:
“Righteous are you,
he being, and having been, O Holy One,
because you have judged these things,
6 because they have poured out blood of holy and of prophets,
and you have given them blood to drink—
they are worthy.”
7 And I heard the altar saying:
“Yes, Lord God Almighty,
true and righteous your judgments.”
8 And the fourth poured out his bowl upon the sun, and there was given to it to scorch men with fire. 9 And the men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God, he having authority over these plagues—and they did not repent to give him glory.
10 And the fifth poured out his bowl upon the throne of the beast, and its kingdom became darkened, and they were gnawing their tongues for the distress, 11 and they blasphemed the God of heaven on account of their distresses, and on account of their sores—and they did not repent of their deeds.
12 And the sixth poured out his bowl upon the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way might be prepared of the kings of the rising of the sun.
13 And I saw out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits, like frogs— 14 for they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go forth to the kings of the whole world, to gather them together unto the battle of the great day of God the Almighty.
15 “Behold, I am coming like a thief—blessed the watching, and keeping his garments so that he should not walk naked and they might see his shame.”
16 And he gathered them together unto the place called in Hebrew Armageddon.
The Seventh Bowl of Wrath
17 And the seventh poured out his bowl upon the air, and a loud voice came out from the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!”
18 And there were flashes of lightning, and voices, and thunders; and there was a great earthquake, such as there had not been since men were upon the earth—so great was the earthquake, so mighty, 19 and the great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and Babylon the Great was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath.
20 And every island fled, and mountains were not to be found. 21 And a great hail, about a talent weight,1 16:21 Greek great hail as of a talent; that is, hailstones weighing approximately 75.4 pounds or 34.2 kilograms each comes down out of heaven upon the men. And the men blasphemed God on account of the plague of the hail, for the plague of it is exceedingly severe.
The Woman on the Beast
17And one of the seven angels having the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, she sitting upon many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and those dwelling on the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her sexual immorality.”
3 And he carried me away in spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet beast being full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stone and pearls, holding a golden cup in her hand, being full of abominations and the impurity of her sexual immorality. 5 And upon her forehead a name was written, a mystery:
BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
The Mystery Explained
6 And I saw the woman being drunk with the blood of the holy, and with the blood of the witnesses of Yeshua. And having seen her, I marveled with great wonder.
7 And the angel said to me, “Why did you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast carrying her, having the seven heads and the ten horns.
8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and go into destruction—and those dwelling on the earth whose names are not written in the Book of Life from foundation of the world will wonder, seeing the beast which was, and is not, and yet will be.
9 Here, the mind having wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains, where the woman sits on them— 10 and there are seven kings. The five are fallen, the one is, the other has not yet come; and when he shall have come, it behooves him to remain a little while. 11 And the beast which was, and is not, is also himself an eighth, and is of the seven, and goes into destruction. 12 And the ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but receive authority as kings one hour, along with the beast. 13 These have one mind, and they shall give up their power and authority to the beast.
The Victory of the Lamb
14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because he is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those with him —called and chosena 17:14 | Greek for “elect” (here translated ‘chosen') is used once in Revelation, and refers back to Matthew 24:31 where he said “he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” (Rev 7:1-8,14:1-5,19:7,8,14,20:4-6) and faithful.”
15 And he says to me, “The waters that you saw where the prostitute sits are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues. 16 And the ten horns that you saw, and the beast, these will hate the prostitute, and will make her desolate and naked, and will eat her flesh, and will burn her with fire. 17 For God has put into their hearts to accomplish his purpose, and to do one purpose, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God will be fulfilled. 18 And the woman whom you saw is the great city, having kingship over the kings of the earth.”
Babylon Fallen
(Isaiah 21:1–10)
18After this I saw another angel descending from heaven with great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his glory.
2 And he cried out in a mighty voice:
“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great!1 18:2 See Isaiah 21:9 and Revelation 14:8.
She has become a lair for demons
and a haunt for every unclean spirit,
every unclean bird,
and every detestable beast.2 18:2 NE, WH, BYZ, and TR a haunt for every unclean spirit and every unclean and detestable bird.
3 All the nations have drunk3 18:3 SBL and WH have fallen by the wine
of the passion of her immorality.
The kings of the earth were immoral with her,
and the merchants of the earth have grown wealthy
from the extravagance of her luxury.”
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:
“Come out of her, my people,4 18:4 See Jeremiah 51:45.
so that you will not share in her sins
or contract any of her plagues.
5 For her sins are piled up to heaven,
and God has remembered her iniquities.
6 Give back to her as she has done to others—
pay her back double for what she has done—
mix her a double portion in her own cup.
7 As much as she has glorified herself and lived in luxury,
give her the same measure of torment and grief.
In her heart she says, ‘I sit as queen—
I am not a widow and will never see grief.’
8 Therefore her plagues will come in one day—
death and grief and famine—
and she will be consumed by fire,
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.”
Weeping and Mourning
9 Then the kings of the earth who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her will weep and wail at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire that consumes her.5 18:9 Literally when they see the smoke of her burning; also in verse 18 10 In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance and cry out:
“Woe, woe to the great city, the mighty city of Babylon, for in a single hour your judgment has come.”
11 And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, because there is no one left to buy their cargo— 12 cargo of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls, of fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet, of all kinds of citron wood and every article of ivory, precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble, 13 of cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, and frankincense, of wine, olive oil, fine flour, and wheat, of cattle, sheep, horses, and chariots, of slaves and souls of men. 14 And they will say:6 18:14 Literally And:
“The fruit of your soul’s desire has departed from you—all your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be seen again.”
15 The merchants who sold these things and grew their wealth from her will stand at a distance, in fear of her torment. They will weep and mourn, 16 saying:
“Woe, woe to the great city—
clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet,
adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls!
17 For in a single hour such fabulous wealth has been destroyed!”
Every shipmaster, passenger, and sailor, and all who make their living from the sea, will stand at a distance 18 and cry out at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire that consumes her. “What city was ever like this great city?” they will exclaim. 19 Then they will throw dust on their heads as they weep and mourn and cry out:
“Woe, woe to the great city, where all who had ships on the sea were enriched by her wealth!
For in a single hour she has been destroyed.”
Rejoice, O Heaven, O Holy
20 Rejoice over her, O heaven, O holy and apostles and prophets, because God has pronounced for you his judgment against her.
21 Then a mighty angel picked up a stone the size of a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying:
“With such violence the great city of Babylon will be cast down, never to be seen again.
22 And the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters, will never ring out in you again.
Nor will any craftsmen of any trade be found in you again, nor the sound of a millstone be heard in you again.
23 The light of a lamp will never shine in you again,
and the voices of a bride and bridegroom will never call out in you again.
For your merchants were the great ones of the earth,
because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery.”
24 And there was found in her the blood of prophets and holy, and of all who had been slain on the earth.
19After this I heard a sound like the roar of a great crowd in heaven, shouting:
“Hallelujah!1 19:1 Hallelujah is a transliteration of the Hebrew Hallelu YAH, meaning Praise the LORD; also in verses 3, 4, and 6. Salvation and glory and power belong to our God!
2 For his judgments are true and just.
He has judged the great prostitute
who corrupted the earth with her immorality.
He has avenged the blood of his servants
that was poured out by her hand.”
3 And a second time they called out:
“Hallelujah! Her smoke rises forever and ever.”
4 And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sits on the throne, saying:
“Amen, Hallelujah!”
5 Then a voice came from the throne, saying:
“Praise our God, all you who serve him,
and those who fear him, small and great alike!”
The Marriage of the Lamb
6 And I heard a sound like the roar of a great crowd, like the rushing of many waters, and like a mighty rumbling of thunder, crying out:
“Hallelujah! For the Lord our God2 19:6 SBL, BYZ, and TR the Lord God the Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him the glory.
For the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
8 She was given clothing of fine linen,
bright and pure.”
For the fine linen she wears is the righteous acts of the holy.
9 Then the angel told me to write, “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
10 So I fell at his feet to worship him. But he told me, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who rely on the testimony of Yeshua. Worship God! For the testimony of Yeshua is the spirit of prophecy.”
The Rider on the White Horse
11 Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me was a white horse. And its rider is called Faithful and True. With righteousness he judges and wages war. 12 He has eyes like blazing fire, and many royal crowns on his head. He has a name written on him that only he Himself knows. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,3 19:13 WH sprinkled with blood and his name is The Word of God.
14 The armies of heaven, dressed in fine linen, white and pure, follow him on white horses. 15 And from his mouth proceeds a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will shepherd them with a rod of iron.4 19:15 See Psalm 2:9 (see also LXX). He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 And he has a name written on his robe and on his thigh:
KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
Defeat of the Beast and False Prophet
17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out in a loud voice to all the birds flying overhead, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings and commanders and mighty men, of horses and riders, of everyone slave and free, small and great.”
19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies assembled to wage war against the one seated on the horse, and against his army. 20 But the beast was captured along with the false prophet, who on its behalf had performed signs deceiving those who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. Both the beast and the false prophet were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. 21 And the rest were killed with the sword that proceeded from the mouth of the one seated on the horse.
And all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.
Satan Bound
20Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the Abyss, holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 And he threw him into the Abyss, shut it, and sealed it over him, so that he could not deceive the nations until the thousand years were complete. After that, he must be released for a brief period of time.
4 Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony of Yeshua and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image, and had not received its mark on their foreheads or hands. And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
5 The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years were complete. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection! The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with him for a thousand years.
Satan Cast into the Lake of Fire
7 When the thousand years are complete, Satan will be released from his prison, 8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—to assemble them for battle. Their number is like the sand of the seashore.
9 And they marched across the broad expanse of the earth and surrounded the camp of the holy and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven1 20:9 BYZ and TR came down from God out of heaven and consumed them. 10 And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, into which the beast and the false prophet had already been thrown. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
Judgment before the Great White Throne
11 Then I saw a great white throne and the one seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from his presence, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne.
And there were open books, and one of them was the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds.
14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death—the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone was found whose name was not written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
A New Heaven and a New Earth
(Isaiah 65:17–25)
21Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth,1 21:1 See Isaiah 65:17 and Isaiah 66:22 (see also LXX). for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying:
“Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man,
and he will dwell with them.
They will be his people,
and God himself will be with them as their God.2 21:3 SBL, NE, WH, and BYZ God himself will be with them.
4 ‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’3 21:4 Isaiah 25:8.
and there will be no more death
or mourning or crying or pain,
for the former things have passed away.”
5 And the one seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.” 6 And he told me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give freely from the spring of the water of life. 7 The one who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be my son.
8 But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.”
The New Jerusalem
9 Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls full of the seven final plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the holy city of Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 shining with the glory of God. Its radiance was like a most precious jewel, like a jasper, as clear as crystal. 12 The city had a great and high wall with twelve gates inscribed with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, and twelve angels at the gates. 13 There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south, and three on the west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations bearing the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 The angel who spoke with me had a golden measuring rod to measure the city and its gates and walls. 16 The city lies foursquare, with its width the same as its length. And he measured the city with the rod, and all its dimensions were equal—12,000 stadia4 21:16 12,000 stadia is approximately 1,380 miles or 2,220 kilometers. in length and width and height. 17 And he measured its wall to be 144 cubits,5 21:17 144 cubits is approximately 216 feet or 65.8 meters. The measure could indicate either height or thickness. by the human measure the angel was using.
18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city itself of pure gold, as pure as glass.
19 The foundations of the city walls were adorned with every kind of precious stone:
The first foundation was jasper,
the second sapphire,
the third chalcedony,
the fourth emerald,
20 the fifth sardonyx,
the sixth carnelian,
the seventh chrysolite,
the eighth beryl,
the ninth topaz,
the tenth chrysoprase,
the eleventh jacinth,
and the twelfth amethyst.
21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, with each gate consisting of a single pearl. The main street of the city was pure gold, as clear as glass.
22 But I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 By its light the nations will walk, and into it the kings of the earth will bring their glory.6 21:24 BYZ and TR include and honor. 25 Its gates will never be shut at the end of the day, because there will be no night there.
26 And into the city will be brought the glory and honor of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who practices an abomination or a lie, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
The River of Life
22Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the main street of the city. On either side of the river stood a tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit and yielding a fresh crop for each month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be within the city, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night in the city, and they will have no need for the light of a lamp or of the sun, for the Lord God will shine on them, and they will reign forever and ever.
Yeshua Is Coming
6 Then the angel said to me, “These words are faithful and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon1 22:6 Or suddenly or quickly; similarly in verses 7, 12, and 20 take place.”
7 “Behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of prophecy in this book.2 22:7 Or scroll; also in verses 9, 10, 18, 19”
8 And I am John, who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had shown me these things. 9 But he said to me, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!”
10 Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of prophecy in this book, because the time is near. 11 Let the unrighteous continue to be unrighteous, and the vile continue to be vile; let the righteous continue to practice righteousness, and the holy continue to be holy.”
12 “Behold, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me. to give to each one according to what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes,3 22:14 BYZ and TR Blessed are those who do his commandments so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by its gates. 15 But outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
16 “I, Yeshua, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the congregations. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the bright Morning Star.”
17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let the one who hears say, “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come, and the one who desires the water of life drink freely.
Nothing May Be Added or Removed
18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of prophecy in this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and the holy city, which are described in this book.
20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Yeshua!
21 The grace of the Lord Yeshua4 22:21 WH and BYZ the Lord Yeshua Christ; TR our Lord Yeshua Christ be with all the holy.5 22:21 SBL, WH, NE, and TR do not include the holy.

2 1:1 Irenaeus (A.D. 180), a student of Polycarp (disciple of the apostle John), wrote that the apocalyptic vision “was seen ... at the close of the reign of Domitian” (Against Heresies 30): Emperor Domitian (self-proclaimed “Lord and God”) reigned from AD 81 to 96.
3 1:4 Literally in Asia; Asia was a Roman province in what is now western Turkey.
4 1:4 seven spirits ⚠️ | Note that the NLT translation errantly changes “the seven spirits” into one as “the sevenfold Spirit” (also at Rev 3:1,4:5,5:6) in order to teach this so-called “sevenfold spirit” is actually “the Holy Spirit” as support for the trinity doctrine—the consequences of this change should be noted at Revelation 22:18,19.

5 1:8 ⚠️ TR errantly reads: Alpha and Omega, Beginning and End
6 1:8 ⚠️ TR errantly omits “God”
7 1:8 is coming—the Almighty | The Almighty “Alpha and Omega” is God who is coming—not his mighty son—speaking: Rev 4:8-10 “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!… the One seated on the throne who lives forever and ever… our Lord and God” and “Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, that you have taken your great power and have begun to reign” is God, and his kingdom (Rev 11:17), not to be confused with his Son and the thousand year reign (Rev 20:4).
8 1:9 earliest commentary on the book of Revelation | Victorinus (late third century) wrote, "When John said these things, he was in the island of Patmos, condemned to the mines by Caesar Domitian. There he saw the Apocalypse—and when at length grown old, he thought that he should receive his release by suffering—but Domitian being killed, he was liberated." (Commentary on Revelation 10:11) “There is no mention in any writer of the first three centuries of any other time or place.”—McClintock and Strong, Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature, 1969
9 1:9 tribulation... and endurance in Yeshua | Jerome (A.D. 340-420) said, In the fourteenth then after Nero, Domitian having raised up a second persecution, he [John] was banished to the island of Patmos and wrote the Apocalypse (Lives of Illustrious Men 9).
10 1:9 exiled on Patmos by Domitian | Clement of Alexandria (A.D. 155-215) says that John returned from the isle of Patmos “after the tyrant was dead,” and Eusebius, known as the “Father of Church History,” identifies the “tyrant” as Domitian (Ecclesiastical History III.23).
11 1:9 testimony of Yeshua | Domitian was fond banishment so that John—the last apostle, and only apostle to die of old age—was exiled to an island, while Peter and Paul were murdered in the time of Nero. (Eusebius III.18—II.25).

13 1:11 ⚠️ TR errantly adds: saying, “I am Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and,
14 1:11 ⚠️ TR errantly adds “which are in Asia” … while these were actual congregations in Asia at the time of John’s writing, we learn in verse 20 that these “are seven congregations” not specifically “the” [seven congregations] “in Asia”
15 1:11 Ephesus | Eusebius records John was sent to Patmos by Domitian, and when those unjustly banished by Domitian were released by his successor Nerva (A.D. During individual gatherings he usually said nothing but, “Little children, love one another.” The disciples and brothers in attendance, annoyed because they always heard the same words, finally said, “Teacher, why do you always say this?” He replied with a line worthy of John: “Because it is the Lord's commandment and if it alone is kept, it is sufficient.” It is speculated that “the source for this story was possibly Hegesippus's Memoirs via either Clement of Alexandria or Origen” though none of these works survive today.
16 1:13 Or one like a son of man; see Daniel 7:13 where the “son of man” whom he calls “Lord” comes to Daniel (Dan 10) to explain the prophecy of 70 weeks (Dan 9) and the last week (Dan 11:21-12:1) unveiled in Revelation.
17 1:16 out of his mouth a sharp double-edged sword | Christ is called “The Word of God” Revelation 19:13.
